Racking is one of the few structures in a building that gets hit by a vehicle as a routine part of its working life. It also fails progressively rather than suddenly, which means the warning signs exist for weeks or months before anything comes down. The question of how often warehouse racking should be inspected in Singapore has a layered answer, because different levels of inspection serve different purposes and run on different intervals.
Three Levels of Inspection
The framework used across the industry has three tiers. Immediate reporting, where any worker who causes or notices damage reports it straight away. A regular internal inspection, carried out by a trained person within the company on a defined cycle. And a periodic expert inspection by a competent person from outside the operation, typically annually. Each catches something the others miss, and skipping the middle tier is the most common gap.
Immediate Reporting Matters Most
The person who reverses a forklift into an upright knows about it before anyone else, and whether they report it determines almost everything that follows. This requires a culture where reporting damage is expected rather than punished, because an operator who fears the consequences will say nothing and the damage enters the structure unrecorded. Make reporting simple, acknowledge it, and act on it visibly. This single practice prevents more failures than any inspection schedule.
The Weekly or Monthly Internal Check
A trained employee should walk the installation on a defined cycle, looking for bent or dented uprights and beams, missing or dislodged safety locks, loose or missing floor anchors, frames out of plumb, damaged bracing, overloaded or badly positioned pallets, and missing load notice plates. Weekly suits busy operations with heavy forklift traffic; monthly can be adequate for low-movement storage. Record each inspection with a date and findings, because an undocumented inspection is difficult to rely on later.
The Annual Expert Inspection
Once a year, someone independent of the daily operation and trained to assess racking should carry out a full inspection and issue a written report. The value of independence is real: an internal inspector walks past the same damage weekly and stops seeing it. The report should classify damage by severity, recommend action against each item with a timescale, and comment on whether the installation still matches its original design and load ratings.
When to Inspect Outside the Cycle
Certain events warrant an inspection regardless of schedule. Any significant impact. Any modification to beam levels or layout. A change in the type or weight of goods stored. Relocation or reinstallation of racking, which is when components frequently get mixed between systems. And after any near miss involving a falling load.
